How are freshwater resources being managed in Hawaii?
I'd say poorly but to be honest I dont know enough.
Where do I begin to research to understand the state of water management being held in Hawaii?
What indicators do you use to tell if a stream is healthy?
By the type of animals and vegetation that are alive and thriving and the condition of the water, if it's clear.
I learned how to take a stream survey today and what tools we would need to do so. Take down coordinates and survey just a 1 meter square (just in out area) what type of water condition it is (riffle, pool. Etc) and what percentage
We learned how to identify the native and non-native species living in the different auwai. (With a guide sheet to help.) Also the different types of water flow, what are the different types of flooring at the bottom of the river. How to record data, coordinates, temp. (which we didn't do because we didn't have a thermometer, also to types of vegetation that surrounds the specific area.
It will definitely take time to really tell the different species apart, they all look the same to me. LOL
We will also be able to see what type of effects our cleaning and removing non-native plants in the auwai will be. Will it have a positive or negative effect? I believe i…
What I have learned today was how to survey and take down data in a proper and professional way. Our speaker Nakoa is a marine biologist who surveys streams and rivers he has taught us different steps also perspectives on surveying fish. I have done it before but forgot some things that went with the survey like taking coordinates with the gps. So it was good to refresh my brain and get to wrap my head around it. Overall I had fun and a cool thing to do because we are currently cleaning out the punawai and seeing more life come back into it.
Today I was getting a refresher on Native and invasive stream species. And just touching base again on how our water is managed through private and public entities. Such as how the state does stream surveys to monitor any change. I also got the methodology for our stream survey ma’a in my head. Going through the steps and working with the crew helped us all understand the concept of today lesson.
